This term, my module focused on coffee culture, history, and café interior design in Hanoi, Vietnam. We explored coffee through a barista course, where we learned to make different types of coffee, studied its history through online learning, and delved into interior design through workshops on our trip to Hoi An. We also visited cafés, made observations, and heard from guest speakers. To showcase our learning, we were tasked with creating a summative project—designing our own café, complete with a signature drink, menu, café space, and a meaningful story.
For my café, I wanted to create something personal—an experience rooted in my own life. The first thing that came to mind was polo, a sport that has been a part of my family for generations. My grandfather was one of India’s most renowned polo players, my father continued the tradition, and I have followed in their footsteps. Looking through old family photos, I decided to incorporate this legacy into my café through a dedicated photo gallery.
Inspired by barns, my café’s design features brick walls and a brown and green color palette, with green as my signature shade. To honor my Indian heritage, I infused cultural influences into the drinks, creating a menu that reflects my background. The space blends old-world sophistication with warmth, featuring saddle chairs at the bar and an inviting atmosphere where people can connect, work, or simply enjoy a great cup of coffee.
