For my service learning project, I will be creating an outdoor education program for underserved teens focused on wild food harvesting in my home town of Santa Fe, NM. Take a look at my proposal slides to get a better idea!
Durring our module (M3) in Italy, we learned about Commedia dell'Arte in Italy. Commedia is an ancient form of theater tracing back to the 1500s. It utilizes a set of stock characters, distinguished by their unique masks, movements, and personalities. In our summative preformance (right), for example, I played Dottore, an old doctor who pretends to know everything while at the same time being a complete idiot.
For this personal project in Vietnam , I investigated Buddhism through direct experience. I interviewed locals to learn about the religion and it's meditation and prayer techniques, visited temples, and put what I learned into practice. I meditated daily at local temple nearby to our residence, each day writing a short poem to reflect on my experiences. At the end of the project, I created a meditation technique based on what I learned that can be practiced by anyone.
My module in Brazil was focused on Capoeira. Through a multitude of experiences, we went from total beginers to haveing a solid foundation of capoeira from which to understand the sport. We built our own Berimbaos (and learned to play them), took bi-weekly classes, and ended by taking a week-long intensive course from Mestre Camisa, one of the leading Capoeristas worldwide. Take a look at my Process Portfolio to see what we did!
