Driving Question
How can I capture and represent the beauty of each country while expressing my love for photography?
Project Summary:
My 2024-2025 photography project focuses on capturing scenic views, breathtaking landscapes, and notable structures and infrastructure in every country I visit. This term, in Brazil, I decided to go beyond the technical aspects of photography and explore the emotional side as well. I'm working on being intentional with each picture I take. For example: Why am I taking this photo? What feeling or emotion am I trying to convey? What techniques will I need to use? And finally, what do I want this photo to achieve? Reflect on these questions to uncover the intention behind the photos before clicking the heading for my explanation:
In this picture, I used a leading line created by the beach's edge and the descending buildings from left to right to capture the stunning water, beach, and architecture. By combining these elements, I aimed to evoke a feeling of wanting to be there—a sense of an incredible place to relax or visit for a vacation.
In this picture, I wanted to highlight the beauty of the lighthouse and create the impression that it was on an island. I achieved this with a wide landscape shot that shows the land sloping downward on both sides. To capture the true colors, I intentionally underexposed the image. My goal was for anyone who sees this picture to feel a sense of awe, thinking, "This is cool, and I want to be there."
In this picture, I wanted to capture and convey the feeling of dense architecture with strong symmetry, highlighted by the tall, rectangular buildings. The greenery at the bottom adds a bit of depth to the composition. To achieve this, I intentionally took a very close or zoomed-in shot, cutting the tallest building in half while leaving some open sky above the second tallest, the orange one. This creates a sense of living in a box, emphasizing the compactness and structure of the scene.
In this picture, I wanted to highlight the contrast between the past and present. This is evident in the way the old architecture is nestled within the lush green forest, almost hidden and blending with nature, compared to the modern architecture in the background standing tall and dominant. The framing of the shot was intentional to emphasize this juxtaposition, using the greenery to separate and connect the two eras. I aimed to evoke a sense of reflection on how far we’ve come, while also appreciating the beauty and significance of what remains from the past.
