Driving Question:
How might we understand the relationship between humans and energy in the past, present, and future of Japan?
Summative:
Keetah and I's summative was a electric generator that would go on a bike to charge phones while biking. This device works by transforming kinetic energy into electric energy. By placing magnets on the rotating gear of a bike, with layers of copper wire in between, it generates an electric current in the wire that can then be conducted to a phone charger or power bank.
Just by living in Japan, we have been able to observe Japanese values and actions. In combination with our study of Japanese religion and history, we have been able to piece these together on a wider scale. Religion impacts many aspects of people’s thinking, in this case, it’s their relationship with themselves and others. In Buddhism, it’s very focused on self-responsibilty, self-reflection and your actions in the world around you. I think that over time, this belief has transformed into a value that can be found in everyday life: bring your own trash with you, don’t eat while walking, don’t ring the bell while biking, don’t honk when driving, don’t charge your phone in public outlets, don’t be too loud, etc.

Driving Question: How might crisis drive humans towards a more harmonious relationship with nature?
Summative:
The final summative of the You're so Eco Module was a action packed ecotour adventure. For my tour with Zaid and Rianon, we showcased the Agistri Island's flora, fauna and marine line through a bike tour and a local seafood restaurant's lunch.
The final outcome of the eco-tour, despite minor hiccups with the restaurant's timing, was successful. Participants enjoyed the scenic bike ride and were engaged during the educational talks about the island's flora, fauna, and marine life. The integration of local food and the use of rented bikes from the community also received positive feedback, as it directly supported the local economy and aligned with sustainable tourism practices. This aspect of the tour not only enhanced the experience but also reinforced the tour's eco-friendly theme.

Driving Question:
How can we understand the impact of equity and Canadian policies on the unhoused populations of Vancouver to propose new policies?
Summative: We applied our knowledge of the intricate dynamics of Vancouver's society in response to the escalating housing crisis. Drawing from first-hand experiences and insights gained from guest speakers, we developed a research question that serves as the foundation for investigating and examining current policies related to the housing crisis. We then formulated and presented a new policy aimed at addressing a selected area of focus within the unhoused population of Vancouver
Maya and I created a policy centered toward community centers. Our research question was: How can we evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of existing mental health services, such as community centers, in addressing the mental health needs of homeless individuals in Vancouver during the fentanyl crisis (2015-2024), and what strategies can be implemented to improve access and outcomes for this population? We collected a lot of evidence including in person interviews and secondary sources.

Driving Question: How can we use our understanding of the science and art of the Renaissance era to create a 3D artistic representation that captures human movement?
Summative: During the Shaping Renaissance module, we had to create a 3D artistic representation that captures the essence of human movement, drawing inspiration from the anatomical precision and artistic techniques of Renaissance sculpture. During the Italian Renaissance, artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci explored the intersection of art and science, delving deeply into human anatomy to create works that celebrated the complexity and beauty of the human form.

Artists: Agnes, Maya, Astin and Gema
Medium: Cardboard, expanding foam, tape, styrofoam paper, hot glue, and paint
The sculpture represents a person crouched in a fetal position, with a towering black form looming over a humanized body like figure and dripping downward, engulging the figure with darkness, objectifying depression into a physical sculpture. The figure’s body is painted in rainbow colors to presenting a notion of innocence, joy, and creativity to the audience, parts of ones self that still exist but are slowly evaporating. The black shape representing depression, fades into the figure’s body to show how mental health struggles can dominate both the inner dialogue and external behaviour. The figure is androgynous to show that depression affects all people, no matter their identity. The removal of indicators of age, race and gender enable everyone to connect with the overaching narrative: depression.
The position of the figure expresses emotional vulnerability, as if they are hiding from both the outside world and from themselves. This is a modern extension of Renaissance Humanism, which focused on the depth and value of individual human experience. Humanist thinkers believed that even pain and struggle were important to express and understand. The sculpture depicts this belief, by giving form to an emotional experience that is often invisible.

Driving Question: How can I design and engineer a compliant robotic leg and teach it to jump in AI stimulation?
Summative: A single leg jumping robot was not created until 2 years ago and I put it upon myself to try to create a novel way to do so. With no previous experience in robotics or programming, I started by taking many courses. I took courses in C++, C, Python to learn to program, and then I took courses in Solidworks and Matlab to be able to stimulate my jumping leg. Using my learning from Solidworks I learned to CNC and 3D print. Following that, I read two textbooks: One in practical electronics and one called "Forces of Matter" by Michael Faraday. The biggest thing that I did for this Mastery project is that I got hired by Dima Grinberg, the CEO of a startup in the Bay Area called Symbiokinetics. This AI and robotics company allowed me to learn about robotics first hand and work on projects that used the knowledge I learned from my courses. I learned how to do NASA grade soldering, electronics, how to program motors and the basics of mechanics. I created many things for the company that are under NDA due to the stealth nature of the company. When I felt I had mastered mechanical and electrical engineering basics, I started building my leg. I came across many challenges such as balancing the single leg and optimizing linkage length, motor weight and motor torque. But I did succeed in the end.

Driving Question:
How can I create a chatbot that serves as a victim advocate in reliable, safe support for a sexual assault victim?
The Problem:
Sexual assault is “sexual contact or behavior that occurs without explicit consent of the victim.” -Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN)
Sexual assault statistics
43.6% of women experienced some form of sexual violence in their lifetime
24.8% of men experienced some form of sexual violence in their lifetime
81.3% female victims experienced their first completed or attempted rape before the age of 25
Sexual assault victim support:
In state courts, 100 million cases of victimization each year
20% of sexual assault survivors report the incident to law enforcement
Survivors face additional trauma when interacting with criminal justice system
Support organizations are low on government funding and rely on volunteers
My Solution:
“Chatbots are seen as non-human and non-judgemental, allowing patients to feel more comfortable sharing certain medical information”
So my solution is an AI Chat bot that serves as victim advocate
24/7 access
Completely anonymous and confidential (no data collection)
Emotional support with education of process
Connect to local resources and victim advocates
Make a written report (factual summary) that they could potentially bring to the police office
Trauma informed advocacy

Driving Question:
How can reconnecting with traditional Italian pottery practices serve as a powerful therapeutic tool for modern mental health challenges?
Summative: My summative for this project was a business pitch for a business that uses pottery as a mental health tool and gives access to pottery workshops. I took many pottery classes to first hand experience the therapeutic effect of pottery.
